2007 has been a wild year to say the least. It has been the absolute best, yet emotionally and physically hardest year of our lives. It has flown by in a haze of sleeplessness and constant exhaustion, coupled with immense pride and unrivaled happiness, all fueled by a steady flow of espresso!

Once again we have really neglected this website with a severe lack of updates and even more criminal is the lack of photos! I wish I had found the time to write during this first year of the boys lives. We have had so many tales to tell and of course dozens (thousands actually) of photos to share. Alas, it was not to be. The boys have naturally been extremely demanding of my time, leaving me little or no free time. However, I am relieved to say that our lives are gradually regaining some semblance of normality and the current status quo is yielding more and more time. So my new year's resolution is to remedy this neglect and hopefully the boys will afford me the time to do so.

I have great plans, of course they are all subject to that ever elusive contingent.... time, but if I put them in writing then maybe, just maybe, they will come to fruition. Starting with a face lift to this site. We need a new name as the old one is hardly relevant anymore, and with the new name a new look. I also desperately want to spend some time working on my cooking blog, which has also been woefully neglected. I hope to find the time to develop it into the vision I had when I created it at least by the end of the year. I think however I should start small, so my first action is to write an update about each of the boys.... there is much to tell.

Hi Everyone.

I am pleased to announce the impromptu and dramatic arrival of our twins, Benjamin Oliver & Elliott Liam born January 25th 11:54 & 11:55am.

I woke up at 7.40am on Monday 21st (30weeks 6 days) to my waters breaking. At first I thought I must have pee'd myself (nice!) but when I stood up there was a big gush all over the floor as I got out of bed and I knew instantly what it was. I called Mark who was out walking the dog and told him to come home immediately, then called the OB and told her I was heading to the hospital.

By the time I arrived at the hospital I was having contractions, but they were irregular and we were not timing them. The first thing they did was an internal to confirm that it was my waters, and quickly saw that it was a major rupture in the lower sac of baby A. They gave me a shot of Betamethasone to mature the babies lungs, and sent me to u/s for a scan to ascertain the size and positions of the twins (A breech, B vertex). By the time I was done in u/s my contractions were 2 and a half minutes apart lasting 40 seconds and had been that way for about an hour or so, so I was really beginning to panic.

Back in L&D they finally agreed that I was in real labour and gave me some pills (can't remember the name) to stop the contractions, and they worked within 5 minutes (relief!). They then started pumping me full of fluids and antibiotics, hooked me up to a foetal monitor and started monitoring me. Once your water breaks the babies are at risk of infection, hence the antibiotics, you also do not get to go home again until the birth, so whether it be 2 days or 2 more months, I was there for the duration.

I was in L&D for about 30 long and completely sleepless hours, before they decided I was stable enough to move to the Ante-partum ward. Where they continued to monitor me but not constantly, but I was finally in a proper bed and not an exam table so I was able to sleep some.

The plan was to try and hold out for a minimum of 48 hours so we could get 2 shots of the Beta in (each shot needs 24 hours to take effect), but we were hoping to hold out for 3 weeks. Unless I spiked a temperature of started bleeding in which case they would deliver me immediately.

Well we only lasted 3 days. On Thursday morning at 7.30am I started having contractions again and also started bleeding, and was immediately whisked off to L&D before I even had chance to realise what was happening.

The bleeding was just normal bloody show, and not placental abruption, so the emergency was quickly downgraded and they let me labour for a while, while they decided on a plan of action. I had another u/s and the resident believed the twins were both vertex, so they said I could try and deliver vaginally. I have to admit, as much as I have been fighting for that chance (my OB wanted to do a c-section but I wanted to try a natural birth), when it was presented to me, I was already emotionally exhausted from the roller-coaster of the last 4 days that I wasn't as thrilled as you'd think! I had totally prepared myself for the c-sec. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the on call Attending from my own OB's practice arrived and redid the u/s and said the resident had mistakenly identified A's butt as his head, and vaginal was out of the question. To which Mark replied "Hey, Don't call my son a butt-face!"

They decided the best thing was to let me labour for a couple of hours, to see if the labour progressed. They were trying to balance, doing the c-section soon enough that it wasn't an emergency but letting me labour enough to be sure the contractions would not just stop by themselves. By 11am they agreed that I was in active labour and it was time. I was immediately wheeled into the OR and the C-section was under way in no time at all.

More fun and games...... The c-section was not uneventful. After the boys were delivered and taken to the NICU, under the watchful eye of their Nana. I started bleeding out and they were struggling to stop it. It was action stations in there, with more residents being called to help, blood being ordered, and copious amounts of clotting drugs being pumped into my IV, a 2nd line being started, then injections straight into my uterus, and suppositories in my rear. Nothing was working, and I could feel myself slipping further and further away. Mark could see it too and says he was very scared because he could see the urgency/controlled panic in the doctors eyes. Eventually they got it under control by stitching up my my uterus into a tight log, basically the OB said that my uterus was trussed up like a pork roast, to force it to contract. She also said that her only other option and the next step would have been an emergency hysterectomy or I would have died. Thankfully the pork roast worked... I'll never be able to tie a roast again without remembering the birth of my twins! The stitches will dissolve and my uterus should return to it's normal shape in about a week or two.

I spent many hours in recovery because of the blood loss, and didn't get to see the boys until late that evening, and even then it was only for a minute or so each, on my way to the ward. But Mark and Mum were able to be with them.

They kept me in hospital for 5 days and discharged me Yesterday. My wound has not fully healed though, when they removed the staples on day 4, half of the incision was still open, so they had to pack it (OUCH) and I now am having home nurse visits daily to unpack and repack it (DOUBLE OUCH). I lost a lot of blood and now have severe anaemia, but am doing fine aside from the pain in the incision which is pretty bad.

More importantly, the boys are doing great. Benjamin (Baby B through pregnancy but Baby A for the birth), needed some help breathing and had to be intubated. He has a couple of congenital heart defects... A PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) which was treated with medication (Indocin) and seems to have closed over already, but he does still have an Aterial Septal Defect (ASD). He also had some jaundice, but that has cleared up now too. He was taken off the ventilator yesterday and put on CPAP, and today they tried him without that for a few hours, but he got tired and had to go back on it. I did get to hold him for the first time though, which was wonderful! Tomorrow they will try him off the CPAP again, and see how he does. Basically they said his muscles aren't strong enough yet and he gets tired. I guess we have to just build them up a day at a time.

Elliott (Baby A during pg, but B for birth) was breathing OK, but needed a little help so was only put on CPAP. He was moved to the transitional ward and taken off the CPAP after only 2 days. He also had some jaundice which has cleared that up. All he needs to do now is learn to nipple, then get big and strong. I have been able to hold him now for 3 days.

It's been a roller-coaster 11 days and I am physically and emotionally exhausted, but I am so happy. My precious boys are here and they are doing better every day. There is nothing like holding your precious baby in your arms.

.... again!

It's almost a year since my last entry entitled "We are expecting" and now 11 months later yet another 4 legs are about to join our rapidly growing family. This time, however, it is not a puppy joining us, this time we are expecting twins! Yes that's right, I am pregnant and in about 7 months (god willing) we will be blessed with two beautiful babies.

Today I am exactly 7 weeks along and the twins are scheduled to make an appearance on March 29th but as we all know these things rarely happen on time and twins have a habit of arriving early. So far everything is going well, we have had 2 ultrasounds already, and on the second one we actually got to see their teeny little hearts beating, which was so amazing. Our next scan is on Monday and we can't wait to see how much they have grown in the last week.

So far I am feeling OK. I have had some "Morning, Noon and Night Sickness" but I am getting a handle on how to make it a bit easier to cope with. My main complaint (and it's not a complaint at all) is that I am so very tired all the time, I just can't seem to get enough sleep, but I guess my body is busy doing miraculous things, so it's understandable.

Needless to say our parents are thrilled, especially my Mum & Dad since this will be their first Grand-Children and they have been waiting very patiently for a long time for us to finally supply them. I will never forget the first time Dad mentioned Grand-kids to Mark and I. It was about 12 years ago, Mark and I had not long been together and had only just moved into our house. We had gone to the house in France for a long weekend with Mum and Dad and were in "Bernard's" having a meal. Out of the blue Dad turned around and said "So, when are you going to give me a grand-child?". I nearly choked on my food, Mark went white as a ghost and Mum promptly gave Dad a swift elbow in the ribs whilst reprimanding him with a stern "Randal! You can't say that!" Well it's taken us some time, but hopefully we are making up for it a bit by giving Dad two Grand-children at once! I swear, when I told Dad the news, I could hear him doing "the jig" down the phone!

Needless to say we too are extremely happy and feeling very blessed. We just pray that the rest of the pregnancy goes well and our two little miracles are born healthy and happy.

The train journey out of the city was "interesting", JB wasn't too happy about being confined to his carrier, he wanted to get out and explore the train and he was very vocal about it roll.gif I was a bit concerned people were going to complain and we'd get thrown off the train, but of course as soon as anyone looked at him, he melted their hearts. I do have a sneaking suspicion that they all silently cheered once we disembarked though.

When we arrived at the house his nose went wild, sniffing the lovely fresh clean air, the trees, flowers, the tidy streets, then meeting new people exploring their house (knocking over the bin, and helping with the clean up!). After a quick inspection of the fence, Mark determined that the garden was "Beagle-Safe" and the monster was set FREE !!! He's never been free anywhere other than the Dog Run before and never on grass, which he loves! I swear he was in heaven. He was rolling around in the grass, mooching around (underneath and behind) the shrubs and bushes. He played soccer with the kids, chase with the adults, ate lots of ice, romped around the herb garden testing all the different herbs. He obliging helped clean up a few spillages including potatoes and BBQ Pork and generally just had a blast.

He did not stop for 5 1/2 hours. He was constantly on the go, not lying down for more than 1 minute at a time, for fear of missing out on something! The only thing that could have possibly made the day better would have been another dog to play with.

The train ride home was a lot easier... he slept the whole way. In fact ever since we got home last night JB has been sleeping. He well and truly wore himself out but he had the best time ever.

It really was a perfect day.

All three of us had a blast walking back. The first challenge was leaving the vets office... stairs... two sets of 3-4 steps. It took a few minutes of coaxing but the little guy figured them out and clambered down admirably (with an audience from the vets office cheering him on!). It's about a mile and he took it all in his stride, the traffic noise didn't seem to bother him, and of course he loved all the people going "OOOO Look at the cute little puppy!", the only things he didn't like was the wind, and he howled at it a few times! lol and the revolving door into our building, no amount of coaxing would get him in it, so we had to carry him through!

He was such a good boy and we had a great time. He is sleeping now, all the excitement wore him out. Mark and I are already busy planning the route for this afternoon and tomorrows walks! lol

It's so cold here at the moment that the vet instructed us that he must wear a coat outside, just whilst he is so little and not used to going outside. Once he's older he should be able to regulate his temperature better and he won't need it. In the meantime here's a picture of him in his little wax jacket, which we think is just so "Beagle-like" being as they are hunting dogs! lol.

Just to set the scene....

We have wooden floors throughout our apartment, which is obviously great for housetraining, but it makes the floor a little slippery for Jeremy's tender pink paws. It took him a few days but he soon got to grips with the physics of forward motion and learned that he couldn't just stop running and expect to stay on his feet, lol, and has now learned that he needs to slow down before stopping and turning - unless of course his intention is to slide on his side or belly across the apartment.

We also have a very long hallway from the front door into the main room of the apartment, it's probably in the region of 15-20 feet. It's our favourite spot for playing ball, as he can really get some speed up (and we can really wear him out), at the opposite end from the front door is our largest sofa which Jeremy likes to hang out and/or hide under.

When we play ball, Jeremy tears down the hallway, gets the ball, and runs right back toward us... but of course at the very last minute veers off course and goes straight passed us, giving us his best "hey, I'm no retriever!" look! He will head straight for the sofa, but when he's about 2-3 feet away he will retract all 4 paws, slip onto his side and slide under the sofa (still with the ball in his mouth). He turns round under there and then sticks his nose out (still with the ball in his mouth) and give us the sweetest little "nah nah" look. It is so funny to watch and we are certain he thinks it's the best part of playing "Fetch".

Well today, he was on track for a good long slide under the sofa, when "DOINK" he came to an abrupt halt as his shoulder banged on the bottom of the sofa! He's getting too big and unless he really hunkers down (and sucks in that huge belly) he can't slide under any more :( He can still crawl under, and hang out there, but no more fancy baseball moves for Jeremy.

They grow so fast! I love watching him change and develop but I am already seeing the black light at the end of this wonderfully lit tunnel, where he will no longer be this cute little baby. I know every stage is as rewarding as the previous, but it's all going by too fast! I want to keep him like this forever (minus the pooping and chewing!), he is such a delight.

We went to the vet today because Jeremy had an upset tummy which wasn't very nice to say the least! Whilst we were there they plopped him on the scales and he came in at a whopping 6lbs 9oz. That's a staggering 1lb 2oz he's put on in 11 days! He really is growing like a weed and soon won't be able to fit under the sofa and in all his other favourite nooks and crannies!

His tummy bug is nothing to worry about, just a nasty little parasite that is pretty common in young puppies. A course of meds and he will be right as rain. I was also concerned about his ears which were a bit pongy and very dirty. Ear infections are very common in breeds with long ears and I recognised the signs from my experience with our family Golden Retriever, Sabre, when I was growing up. Again a simple course of ear drops and all will be well.

He was such a good boy, none of the "Beagle Theatrics" that we had on his last visit. A bit of wriggling when the nurse was cleaning his ears, but that is all. I was very proud of him, he took it all in his stride. What a difference 2 weeks makes.

For all that I was presented with a bill for $200.... welcome to the world of pet ownership! Thankfully we took out pet insurance, and judging by this trip we are going to need it! This beagle is costing us a fortune but he's worth every cent!

Well it's been a week now and oh boy what a week! It's like suddenly having a toddler in the house but one that doesn't wear diapers! Jeremy is so feisty and in everything we can't take our eyes off him for a second. He is a true pleasure though.

The first few nights he was a little unsure about things and nervous because of the adjustment to being without his Mom and litter mates, but by the forth night he was sleeping contently, with no hysterics at bedtime. He can currently sleep for about 6 hours before he has to get up and go potty, that is pretty good for a puppy of only 8 weeks and fortunately he usually will settle back down in his bed for another hour or so before demanding his breakfast.

He has totally bonded with us and we absolutely adore him. He has such a wonderful temperament, both playful and energetic whilst still being extremely cuddly, which is exactly what we wanted in our dog and one of the main reason we chose to have a Beagle.

He is growing so fast. Even in the last week we can see big changes not only in his size but also in his intelligence. He is less clumsy now and his eyesight is much better. He has started "problem solving" and figuring out solutions to things like how to get to something he is too small to reach. He body is changing too, he has developed a true Beagle shape now and has great conformity to the breed standard. He is currently 8½" tall, 10½" long, his chest is 12½" and last Monday at the vet, he was a whopping 5lbs 7oz. His browns are starting to fleck through the black fur and his pink nose is filling in gradually.

He is a whole heap of trouble but he is also a joy. He's so wonderfully adorable and we couldn't love him more.

We got home with Jeremy at around 1pm this afternoon. The journey from the breeder's was "interesting". Who knew such noise could come out of something so tiny! He SCREAMED the whole way home. However once we got back to Manhattan and out of the car he was fine, so we think it was the car he particularly didn't like (Tech's driving can do that to you! lol) We let him out of the carrier when we got into the apartment and he has had a whale of a time for the last hour or so, running round sniffing everything and playing with some of his new toys and of course us! He seems very happy. We have taken around 30 photos already, but it's a challenge he runs off just as the shutter goes, so we have lots of "Jeremy was here" photos. He is now sleeping contently in his basket.

Yesterday we finally got to go and meet the litter and pick out our puppy! The breeder lives out in New Jersey so we had to hire a car for the day. The journey in itself was a bit of an adventure. We opted to rent the car in Jersey City near Mark's office (just over the water from us) so as not to have to drive in the city. Firstly when we got the car there was a problem and we had to switch cars, which delayed our departure by about half an hour. Then, although the journey should have taken us a little over an hour, exiting Jersey City on the right road proved almost as hard as trying to find the exit in a Las Vegas Casino! The road layout is a complete nightmare and we wound up going round in circles for 30 minutes trying to get onto the right Interstate (Motorway) at the right junction. So even though we allowed 2 hours for the journey we still wound up being late! "Quelle surprise!"

We were the second couple to pick our puppy, and the first couple actually choose to have two, so we had a choice of 3 gorgeous little guys. Being only 4 weeks old they were all very tiny and not used to being away from their Mom and handled by strangers, so there was a fair bit of crying and shaking! At first I had no idea how I was ever going to pick one, but after spending some time with them and watching them play with each other it suddenly became easy. One of the puppies was very quiet and timid and we quickly ruled him out as not being feisty enough for our household! The other two however, were very sprightly in trotting around the play pen and playing with each other. With no prompting Mark and I simultaneously pointed to a puppy and said "Him!" Of course we pointed at different puppies! It was only a matter minutes before Mark came round to my way of thinking when Jeremy did something or other that made Mark's heart leap and he said, "Yes, that's Jeremy!"

Terry kindly then allowed us to spend about an hour with him. The poor little mite started of crying and shaking so much but all the while his tail was wagging furiously, so I don't think even he knew what to make of it all. Soon he fell asleep in Mark's arms and snuggled into his jumper for a very contented nap. When he woke up he seemed much more relaxed and very happy to be passed from one of us to the other and have his photo taken whilst he napped some more!

Mark and I are both very happy and excited and can't wait to bring him home on Nov 20th. It's going to be a long 3 weeks!
